Answer - E-commerce is the ability to take payments for a product or service right through your web site.
This requires that you have a merchant account, and a company that will process the credit card payments you receive, also called a payment gateway.
A merchant account is a special account that will accept the funds from your credit card processor (payment gateway) and deposit the funds into your regular bank account.
If you already have a business, you may already accept credit card payments. Check with your provider to find out if they can add e-commerce.
